Milford-on-Sea Parish Council have been informed by New Forest District Council that essential beach recycling works will be undertaken this October a Hurst Spit.
The maintenance work is required ahead of the Winter 2025/26 to restore the spit’s profile and reduce the risk of flooding and erosion in Keyhaven and surrounding areas following severe storms during winter 2023/24 and Storm Herminia in January 2025.
Nature of Works
The works involve moving a volume of shingle material from naturally accreting areas of Hurst Spit to the narrow, eroded sections. Where possible, they aim to restore the crest width to approximately 10-12 metres, thus improving the spit’s ability to provide flood and erosion protection to Keyhaven and the surrounding areas.
Programme:
Start date; 6th October 2025 (subject to sea and weather conditions)
Plant Deliveries: From Thursday 2nd October
Durations: 2-3 weeks, with up to 4 weeks allowed if conditions require
Access And Safety
The spit will remain open for public access; however access to certain sections will be restricted during the works for safety reasons. Please observe all signage and follow instructions form site personnel. Heavy machinery will be operating on the beach throughout the works.
